Introduction
This meeting will be attended by clinicians and researchers from a wide range of professional disciplines including biomedical engineering, speech and language therapy, ENT, gastroenterology, stroke medicine, dietetics, oral health, general medicine and neurology.
The conference focuses on four main themes: the central control of swallowing and respiration; clinical assessment; instrumental investigation; and new/ emerging treatments.
This years keynote speech will be given by Professor Angus Walls, Professor of restorative dentistry who has clinical and research interests in the oral and dental problems of older people with natural teeth.

This one day event comprises focussed lectures and chaired discussion sessions during which audience participation will be warmly invited.
Conference aims and learning outcomes
- Disseminate and debate the latest swallowing research
- Bring researchers together from basic science and clinical practice to share ideas and develop research projects
- Encourage peer review and support for work in progress
- Invite international research leaders to present key note lectures
It is anticipated that by the end of the day participants will have increased awareness of:
- the central control of respiration and swallowing;
- the advantages and disadvantages of assessment tools;
- the future directions for image analysis;
- the use and limitations of sensory stimulation techniques & drug treatments for patients with dysphagia
